Our September BoomScreen Monthly Roundup was hosted by Aviv Florenthal (Senior Product Manager, BoomScreen) and Dani Lowder (Principal Customer Success Manager). One big feature is close to launch, and a long list of smaller upgrades already went live. As always, nearly all of it came straight from your feedback.
Couldn’t make it? Here’s the quick version!
Spotlight feature
Improved payroll integration (coming soon)
For employed applicants, payroll is the most direct source of truth we have for income. Linking to a provider like ADP, Workday, Paycom, or Gusto returns gross income, net income, and the employer, and coverage extends to company-specific portals and gig platforms like Uber and Lyft. It also answers a question a W2 can’t: whether someone is still actively on that payroll today, not just that they worked somewhere last year.
It’s also the least used method we offer. About 3% of income verifications run through payroll today, while roughly 30% come through bank linking, so willingness to link an account isn’t the problem. This release goes after the two things standing in the way: broader employer coverage so more applicants can find their provider, and payroll verification offered first to every employed applicant.
Rolling out later this month:
- A new payroll vendor with broader employer coverage, so more applicants can find their provider and successfully connect
- Richer data on each verification, including employment status
- W2s and paystubs pulled straight from the provider, automatically
- Payroll surfaced earlier in the applicant flow, as the first option we offer anyone who tells us they’re employed
The goal is a triple win: easier for the applicant, less income review on your side, and a verification you can trust is current.
Also shipped this month
- Name mismatches on income documents are flagged. If an income document comes in under a different name than the applicant attested to, the Warnings Report flags it for a second look. On for every account. Name matching is hard, so send edge cases to your CSM.
- Applicants get warned about incomplete income documents. Ask for three months of statements and get one, and we tell the applicant before they submit. They can still continue, so nothing is blocked on your end.
- Duplicate income documents are removed automatically. The same paystub uploaded ten times used to count ten times. Now Boom catches repeat uploads as they come in and removes them, so verified income doesn’t get inflated. On across every account, no setup required.
- Customizable group metrics. Add, rename, rearrange, and remove the metrics at the top of an application, and scope each one to applicants, guarantors, or occupants. Build a DTI metric just for guarantors, or an average credit score for them. Every user sets their own view. To configure, open any application → Group metrics → Edit view. Tell your CSM which metrics you’d like added to the list.
- Criteria based on who’s on the application. Write rules on the roles in a group, like capping occupants or requiring a guarantor, and set different income thresholds depending on whether a guarantor is present. Fewer applications land in manual review. To set up, navigate to Screening settings → Recommend approval/decline when → Add rule → Applicant roles included in group.
- More applicant nudges move to SMS. Applicants now get a text alongside email at the points where an application can stall. Newest sends cover the applicant survey, pet screening, and canceled document requests.
- A simpler way for applicants to invite their household. Co-applicant, occupant, and guarantor now sit on one screen, each with a plain description of what the role means, and only the roles your template accepts are shown. Invite by email or copied link, and see the status of everyone in the group.
- Group nudges that name names. Applicants used to submit, assume they were done, and call to ask why nothing was happening. Now everyone in the group gets an email and a text naming whoever still hasn’t finished, with follow-ups at 24, 48, and 96 hours. No setup required.
- Exact housing history gaps. Applicants see the precise date range they’re missing with a prompt to add an address, instead of a generic error. No math, no hunting. More housing history improvements are coming next month.
- Choose which application emails you get. Two separate notifications now, one for when an individual applicant submits and one for when the whole group submits. Turn on the first to chase stragglers, or just the second for a quieter inbox. To configure, navigate to Settings → Notifications.
- Copy an application link before a unit is listed. Grab a unit’s application link as soon as the unit exists, flagged so you know it won’t accept applications yet. Prep your syndication, website, and touring services ahead of the unit going live. To copy, open Units → ••• → Copy application link.
- Webhook for notes added to an application. Fires the moment a note is written and sends the application, text, author, and timestamp to your external systems, including automation tools like Zapier. Internal notes and change log entries don’t trigger it. Subscribe in Settings → Webhooks.
